Tree Surgeon Prices: What Changes the Cost of Tree Work
Tree surgeon prices vary because no two trees are the same. This guide sets out what actually drives the cost, so you know what you are paying for. We work across Surrey and South West London, and we keep our pricing plain and honest.
Tree surgeon prices: what does a tree surgeon charge?
There is no single price for tree work. A quote is built from the job in front of us, not picked from a price list.
Every tree presents its own conditions, and those conditions are what move the price up or down. That is why we look before we quote.
What we price on
- the size, species and condition of the tree
- how close it is to buildings, fences, cables and neighbouring gardens
- whether the work is a reduction, a full removal or hedge work
- access for equipment and where the arisings can go
- how much waste there is and whether you want the chip and logs left
- whether a Tree Preservation Order or conservation area consent applies
We quote in person and in writing, so you know the figure before we start.

What does a tree surgeon charge per day?
Some jobs are naturally priced as a day of work with a full crew and kit. A day rate reflects a qualified team, insurance, climbing and rigging equipment, chippers and safe disposal, not just the time on site.
Most domestic jobs are quoted as a fixed price for the whole job rather than by the day, so you are not exposed if the work runs long.
[CONFIRM: your standard day rate for a two person crew, if you want it published]
Do tree surgeons charge by the hour?
Hourly charging is rare for tree work, because setting up, climbing and clearing take time regardless, and an hourly figure tells you very little about the final bill. We prefer a fixed quote for the job, so the price is clear from the start.
[CONFIRM: whether you ever charge an hourly rate, and what it is]
What does tree stump removal cost?
Stump grinding is priced on the diameter of the stump, how many stumps there are, the root spread and access for the grinder, and stumps near walls, drives or services take longer. Stumps are ground below ground level, so you can replant or turf over. Find out more about our stump grinding.

What does a crown reduction cost?
A reduction is priced on the height and spread of the crown, the amount being taken off, access and the volume of brash created. A careful reduction protects the long-term health of the tree rather than just cutting it back hard. See our tree reductions and pruning and tree removal services for the full scope of the work.
How much is hedge trimming and reduction?
Pricing depends on the run length, the height, how overgrown it is and whether you want a trim, a reshape or a full reduction, plus whether the clippings are taken away. See our hedge trimming and pruning service, or look at a top hedge reduction in Oxshott.
Is there a free tree cutting service in the UK?
Free tree work is uncommon and usually applies only in narrow cases, for example trees the council owns on public land, or a utility company clearing growth away from its own lines.
Trees on your own property are your responsibility, and offers of free felling in exchange for the timber are worth treating with care, because the crew still needs qualifications, insurance and a safe method. Our quotes are free and carry no obligation, even if the work is not.
What should a tree surgeon quote include?
- the scope of work, tree by tree
- who removes the waste
- proof of NPTC City & Guilds qualifications
- a copy of the public liability insurance and the cover level
- whether TPO or conservation area applications are handled
- site protection and clean-up
- a written fixed price, with no vague extras
We are happy to send our certificates and insurance documents before you commit.
Why the cheapest quote is rarely the cheapest job
Uninsured work leaves you exposed if something is damaged, and rushed cuts can leave a tree weaker and cost more later.
We would rather price the job properly and leave your garden as we found it. You can read our reviews to see how we work.
