Tree cutting in Surrey and South West London

Tree cutting is one of the most common jobs we carry out across Surrey and South West London, and when people ask for it they usually mean one of four things: a crown reduction, a crown lift, thinning, or pruning. Full tree removal is rarely what is needed. We will look at the tree, listen to what you want to achieve, and tell you which approach fits, so the tree stays healthy and the problem is sorted. We will always tell you if the tree does not need cutting at all.

Crown reduction

A crown reduction brings the overall height and spread of the tree down while keeping its natural shape. We cut back the longest branches to side growth that can take over as the new tip, so the tree stays balanced and healthy rather than looking lopped or stubbed. It is the right call when a tree has grown too big for its space but is still sound.

Crown thinning

Thinning removes selected branches from inside the canopy to let more light and air through, without changing the tree's overall outline. It is a good choice when a tree is casting heavy shade over a garden or window but you do not want it made smaller. Done well, thinning also reduces wind resistance and helps the tree stay stable in storms.

Crown lifting

Crown lifting removes the lowest branches to raise the canopy, clearing a drive, path, road or garden underneath. It is the job we do most often for trees that have started to block access or brush against cars and pedestrians. We lift to a sensible height that keeps the tree looking natural and avoids leaving it top-heavy.

Pruning and shaping

Routine pruning keeps a tree in good shape, removes awkward or crossing branches, and encourages healthy growth. Reshaping an older tree that has been left too long is often possible with the right cuts made at the right time. When tree cutting is not the answer

Sometimes a tree is better taken out altogether, especially if it is dead, dangerous or in the way of planned building work. In that case we handle the full tree removal safely. If the issue is just dead branches, the tree may only need deadwood removal rather than a reduction.

Protected trees

Many trees in Surrey are covered by a Tree Preservation Order or sit in a conservation area, and tree cutting on a protected tree without permission can lead to a fine. We will check what applies to your tree and advise on what consent is needed before any work starts.
